Unlocking the power of digital identity and verifiable credentials

Data privacy and efficiency gains

Awareness of the power of verifiable credentials is growing as the requirement for improved data privacy and security increases.

Our pilot program explored the value proposition and technical feasibility of using verifiable credentials as part of an onboarding process for a workforce with specialised skills that needed to be checked.

Pilot objective

The goal of the pilot was to determine whether the employer’s operations teams and employees would benefit from using verifiable credentials as part of the onboarding process. Specifically the pilot set out to

  • Reduce the amount of time and resources spent on the onboarding process, and subsequent follow up of employee documentation close to expiry.
  • Minimise collection of personal information limiting it to the bare minimum required to complete the onboarding process.
  • Securely store and exchange employee data.
  • Facilitate secure access of data via a consumer device and the company’s database.
  • Verify the validity of exchanged personal information.
Secure Value Exchange

Participants

The pilot involved both the employer’s operations team and employees.

  1. The HR/Operations staff managed the employee onboarding process via a relying party simulator (Onboarding Dashboard).
  2. The employees/workforce members completed their onboarding via a decentralised wallet provided by Meeco (Wallet).
Participants

Meeco’s products and services at work

Meeco’s products and services were integrated with existing services across the onboarding journey.
Secure Value Exchange

The pilot was enabled by a range of different technologies and applications.

  • Queensland TMR provided the core identity attributes.
  • connectID’s broker service securely transferred these attributes to Meeco.
  • Meeco’s Secure Value Exchange (SVX) generated W3C verifiable credentials which were stored in the wallet.
  • The verifiable credentials were registered on the Hedera Hashgraph distributed ledger.
  • The wallet enabled the sharing of credentials between the employee and Powertech in real time.

Outstanding efficiency gains

The benefits of verifiable credentials for employee onboarding are clear:

  • The overall onboarding process was reduced from three days to just 30 minutes.
  • Employee waiting time  was reduced from 48 hours to 30 minutes.
  • 100% of participants (both HR teams and workforce members) found the new process easier than the current process.
Multipurpose Wallet

“This trial shows the practical benefits that digital identity can bring when solving everyday business issues, like massive lifts in convenience and productivity. By using the connectID network to deliver digital credentials sourced from the Department of Transport and Main Roads, these critical infrastructure employees and operators were able to save two days and get to work faster.”

"By using the Meeco mobile identity wallet in combination with Hedera’s proven distributed ledger technology we’re able to embed trust into the very forefront of necessary everyday interactions like credential checks. Enabling employees to participate transparently in the creation, access and permission of immutable identity, safety and compliance records was easy and fast. As a result, benefits such as time saving, and convenience were realised for all the workforce stakeholders.”

Digital Identity has been largely talked about as authentication and logins. Credentials like driver licences are still the dominant form of representing identity in the community. Linking digital credentials to a digital account creates a complete digital identity solution, and we are very grateful to be able to work with industry and businesses to prove and realise that vision.”
